Tom Panzarella started the deli, his son Dave Panzarella runs it now. Over the years the two have had lots of customers who turned into friends. But that's not why the deli is unique. Tom loves Marilyn Monroe; the place is packed with Marilyn pictures in every nook and cranny - but that's not why it's unique either. This deli is unique because of a board full of paper that sits on a stand in the corner.
The board has names on it - lots of names. When one page of paper fills up, Tom puts up another. Each name is a man or woman who is serving in the military in far away places like Iraq and Afghanistan. Each name was put there by family, friends or neighbors who are worried about that person. Panzarella started the board back during the Gulf War in 1991, when a friend of his was serving. He put his friends name on a piece of poster board, and before he knew it customers had added the names of their friends. It's been a tradition at the deli ever since.

Penn Station has been advertising its five new cold subs all over the place so I decided to give their Italian a try. I ordered a large Italian cold sub and the employee asked me if I wanted it toasted. Since the idea they are promoting is “cold subs”, I was surprised by the question and said no to the toasting. When I unrolled the sub, it looked huge and stacked full of ingredients. However, after taking one bite, it tasted like it was the same old Italian they make on their regular menu, just not grilled and toasted. After checking their menu online, I was able to confirm that the ingredients of my cold sub matched the hot sub exactly. So, the cold subs at Penn Station do not seem to be new, just not toasted/grilled.
