The consistency of the food may vary, but there should be no arguments about the setting, overlooking Lake Merritt ringed with lights, with views of the Oakland hills beyond.

Cass Calder Smith, who also designed LuLu, La Mar Cebicherria and Terzo, has worked his magic on the interior. It has the feel of a cabin cruiser, with an 80-foot marble bar overlooking the lake, and a kitchen that's sequestered behind vertical slats inset with gold glass. You can see the chef working, but it's more art than utility.
